“Roadmap to Hell: Sex, Drugs and Guns on the Mafia Coast”
“Roadmap to Hell: Sex, Drugs and Guns on the Mafia Coast” by Barbie Latza Nadeau” is a heart wrenching piece of journalism that does a brilliant job of unravelling the complicated web of policies, current events, prejudices and uniquely Italian components that allows for the current situation that migrants and asylums seekers face in today’s Italy. Ms. Latza Nadeau writes with the incisive insights that only one who has lived and worked within the labyrinth can. She gives voice to the voiceless and tells their stories with compassion and intelligence while laying out an astute “Roadmap” as to how a modern day slave trade is able to exist and persist in our current era. This is a book that needs to be read by everyone with a heart and a conscience.
We are sharing this book with our community because since we have begun our participation in the Safe Space Project at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center to offer reproductive health & pediatric clinics and education to refugee and asylum seeking women and children, many of you have asked about the community with whom we are working. While clearly not reflective of all of the experiences of the women in the Safe Space, “Roadmap to Hell” sheds light on the challenges many in the community face, the risks and fears they live with on a daily basis and the elements that dictate the current climate for migrants and those seeking asylum in today’s Europe.
